A walk around the mountain sanctuary site yesterday. Everything is bursting with life after all the rain in March 🌸

We have found a local builder to help us with the fence for the goats and so this week we will be ordering the materials! We will still help by laying out all the posts and taking the cement mixer and the tractor up there to help ferry around the cement to where needed. This way, once we’re started, it should be pretty quick to get done 🐐

Meanwhile we continue to wait for the license for the equines. This was refused due to “inactivity” on our part whilst we waited for the requested architects report and so we have to start again 😅

The pigs, as we have mentioned, cannot live at this land or be moved anywhere else. This is why we are fundraising to buy the original sanctuary site and to have two sanctuaries. This was never what we intended at this stage but our only other option is to sell the mountain site which we have already put so much effort into and which the animals are going to love so much 🥲

Time is running out to secure the original site as the property owner wants to sell in June and has another buyer in place. Can you help us secure the home for the pigs and to build an infirmary for the elderly and disabled animals?: 🌲LINK IN BIO🌲

The horses decided an early morning wake up call by breaking fences, thundering around then a jaunt next door would be a lovely idea. Who could blame them when the grass is this lush? 🌱

Although this looks like lovely free food- leaving the horses on this grass for too long could cause colic which can be life threatening. It’s hard to send them back when they’re having such a lovely time though 🥲

Two brave donkeys today: Dotty and Steve, had their teeth floated today 🦷✨

Floating (either with a manual or electric rasp) is a procedure which files any sharp edges of the teeth which can otherwise cause pain and discomfort when eating.

Wild equines usually browse on hardier foods which helps to file their teeth naturally. Our domestic horses and donkeys normally have a softer diet and so from time to time will need a helping hand from a vet or equine dentist.

The animal is usually lightly sedated (unless they are well habituated and unbothered by the procedure). It is safe and usually over within 10 minutes.

We are getting around to installing some of the larger gifts that we received at Christmas time!

We had a bit of a mystery delivery at Christmas: an enormous package arrived and none of us could remember what it was… until we realised it was a shed we’d put on our wish list! It was so big, the amazing owner of the local pet food store personally delivered it (thank you!!).

Plot twist: it’s going to be our new pig shelter! We can’t wait to paint it and make it cozy for the piggies 🐽

We also installed the baby gate for the feed shed, that was gifted, to keep Timo the dog and Steve & Dotty the donkeys out. Unfortunately, Steve is clever too and has already figured out how to open it so the door also needs to be shut to keep him out! Sometimes he’s too smart for his own good 😆

For those who don’t know, yesterday Spain, Portugal and parts of France had power outages. The whole of Spain had no electricity or mobile coverage from 12.30pm for almost 12 hours.

Thanks to our @vtomanofficial {gifted} and Starlink, we were able to get online to check what was going on and power devices, charge torches etc.

All the shops closed, people were asleep in their cars at petrol stations.
It was crazy to see how dependent we have all become on power but although inconvenient, it was actually nice to be forced to disconnect.

They still aren’t sure about the cause of the outage…does anyone think donkeys were involved? 🤔😂

Meet Captain Jack (Sparrow)!

This tiny nestling was found on the ground beneath a roof where the sparrows nest in the gutters- too high up and crowded to safely return him to the right one. With a lot of cats as well, it was too risky to construct a makeshift nest for him nearby.

With his eyes still closed and no feathers, he wouldn’t have survived long alone but luckily he did have a safe landing on a dog blanket below (where thankfully the dogs didn’t spot him!)

Now safe in our care, Captain Jack is warm, responsive, and eating like a champ! We’re taking it day at a time but he seems to be doing well.

If you ever find a nestling:
• Try to return it to the original nest if you can spot it (Don’t worry birds won’t reject their babies due to human scent)
• If the nest can’t be found or safely reached (like in Jack’s case), contact a licensed wildlife carer or sanctuary
• Meanwhile, keep the chick warm, quiet, and safe and don’t feed unless you’ve been advised how.

We are sad to share the news that this week we lost Julius, a month and a half after his diagnosis of an oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Julius was finding it increasingly difficult to eat and was rapidly dropping weight. We had him put to sleep at the Sanctuary on Monday. He was aged 8-9. In the days before, although he was barely able to eat, he was still interacting with the herd but it was clear that he was struggling with pain, despite being on painkillers.

Pigs hide pain very well so it’s never easy to make that decision for them but this was something that would only get worse and it was the most compassionate decision we could have made for him.

Thank you to those who donated supplements and supported us through vet bills for him plus all of the general donations which have helped care for him over the years. He had a few issues over the years and even had an eye injury at one point (hence the eye patch).

He was a very cute and gentle pig and we miss seeing his sweet face looking up at us every feed time.

You may remember in AUGUST our water pump, which carries water all over the land to the animals, broke.

Due to its age, we needed a completely new one but as the old one didn’t carry the details of its power etc, it took a while to find the correct replacement.

First we had a submersible pump which helped us bring water out of the well to fill up IBC’s to carry water by car and trailer to each enclosure. After about a month, this pump broke and we had to get an above ground one to do the same job but neither pump was powerful enough to pump water all around the land.

Due to holidays, not knowing the specific requirements of the pump and taking a while to find the correct supplier, it has taken until now to have this problem sorted. The first pump our plumber put in wasn’t powerful enough so he worked until late last night putting in the correct replacement which is just as powerful as the original! 🙏🏻

Hi JR family.
Our little Broccoli pig had surgery on Monday to remove a uterine tumor which grew very large very quickly, resulting in a sudden big, round abdomen.

The tumor, weighing an incredible 19kg, was successfully removed and Broccoli seems to be recovering well. She is isolated from the other pigs whilst she heals so we can easily medicate her, observe her and ensure she gets enough food.

She has been eating small amounts but today seems to have her appetite back and we’re hoping she can join her pig friends again very soon. She surely must be feeling a lot better now that the tumor has been removed and she is recovering from the surgery.

With over 140 animals in our care, sometimes it feels like we’re constantly on our toes! But seeing animals like Broccoli pull through reminds us exactly why we do this and why it’s so important to stay vigilant to the needs of the animals.

Broccoli’s surgery was an unexpected bill of €490 (not including the bills for pre-op scans and tests). As we already have some fundraisers ongoing, I have reattached the parasite treatment fundraiser here as reaching this goal will help a lot.
I will also leave alternative funding methods below for those who are interested. You’ll also find these links in our bio.

“Look at my new toy!”

So I am trying to fill up a box of toys for all of the dogs to enjoy but Sam destroyed his shoe toy the other day and so when this new one came through, naturally it was his! (although Barney did try to get there first by chewing open the box!)

Sam pulled a couple of his stitches as he managed to get his cone off one night. He had to have staples 😖 Otherwise he is mending fine, no infection! He’ll be able to have the cone off in a few days.

How gorgeous does Sam look in the greenery? Spring has finally sprung after a very wet March!

That leads us to another very important topic however…
TICK SEASON! 🦟

This means we are on a very important mission to protect our cats and dogs against parasites 🥊
Whilst they have standard routine protection, this month is a larger bill for parasite control for the cats and dogs. That’s because all of the dogs need new leishmaniasis collars (which aren’t cheap). These collars protect the dogs that don’t have leish from the bite of sandflies. And for the dogs that do have leish? It stops it spreading further.

We have attached a fundraiser to this post to cover our monthly bills for parasite protection JUST for the cats and dogs. The other animals have biannual protection which we will be organising soon.

We need:
Wormer for 19 cats for internal parasites 🪱
Spot-on for 19 cats for external parasites 🪳
Wormer for 8 dogs for internal parasites 🪱
Spot-on for 8 dogs for external parasites 🪳
Collars for 8 dogs for leishmaniasis protection 🦟

Not your average coffee date…Macario decided to pop in for a coffee whilst we were quietly watching the horses grazing at the bottom of the Sanctuary.

Macario is a curious, affectionate and oftentimes silly donkey. He came to us after his owner died, leaving him alone. Although overnight he stays with Barry the donkey, when they are loose to free roam, he prefers his own company. We think he has probably lived alone most of his life and prefers humans to other equines. We think he would climb into the car if he could! 😆

This is super exciting but also extremely urgent. We need to secure the existing Ridge property for the pigs. After securing a larger site to move all of the animals to, we were told the pigs cannot be moved due to new laws surrounding their breed. We can’t continue with the rent and we only have 2 months to raise the money before the property is sold to another buyer. Please help if you can ❤️ If our videos put a smile on your face then pop a little in the pot. If all of our followers across both Facebook and Instagram donated just €1 we would have more than enough to secure the site! Thank you 🙏🏻

Our little pot belly, Broccoli, very suddenly has a bigger pot belly than usual!

We’ve had to wait a couple of weeks for the vet to be available to see her. This isn’t something a pig vet can address on site and only one vet at our regular clinic has experience in treating pigs and often deals with ours when these sorts of situations arise.

An xray showed a mass of sorts but it’s unclear of the origin. She is also full of liquid, which the body is generating as a result, and this is preventing a clear view on the xray. Her bloods are clear except for a slight anemia which is due to her eating less.

She is going to require a CAT scan at a specialist hospital for which we have to wait until Monday to be able to make an appointment. Then we will be able to see exactly where the mass is and if it can be operated on.

In the meantime she is separated with another pig and we are working on keeping her strong with lots of tasty snacks and some iron supplement.
She is likely in a lot of discomfort so we are hoping for a resolution for her as soon as possible, however that looks like.

Yesterday we had to make the difficult decision to let Zorro go after a sudden decline in health. Due to his FIV he couldn’t fight the infection in his mouth and his kidneys had become damaged due to the stress of the body trying to constantly deal with the infections, despite the use of almost constant antibiotics. The only reason his condition wasn’t worse is because of the high level of steroids he was on daily.

We didn’t think it was fair to prolong his suffering. He was constantly hungry but couldn’t eat well because of the ulcers in his mouth and as FIV is incurable, we had to consider his quality of life moving forward.

Although he has only been in our lives for four months since he showed up on the sanctuary in a terrible state, he has made a huge impact. Despite the pain and malnutrition, he was mostly happy and enjoyed lots of attention and affection. We wish we could have had him for longer but we are glad we could offer him a soft place to land in a difficult time and lucky to have known him.
