Team Recruitment

FULL TIME, LIVE IN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We are looking for a dedicated, passionate, hardworking individual to join the team as our Field Manager

Role: Field Manager

Location: Murcia, Spain

Term: July – November 2019 (with the potential to continue for the 2020 season of March to November)

Remuneration: At present, this is a voluntary position with meals and accommodation provided by us at the sanctuary

THE SANCTUARY:

Jacobs Ridge is a vegan animal sanctuary in southern Spain. We provide a home to over 130 rescued animals (horses, donkeys, goats, pigs, sheep, cats and dogs), giving them the chance to live the rest of their lives without fear.

Since 2015, our main way of funding the sanctuary is through volunteer breaks. We prefer to give something back to our supporters rather than ask for straightforward donations; volunteers come and live at the sanctuary and spend their days with the animals. The volunteer program is what keeps the sanctuary alive and WE LOVE our volunteers.

Our ethos is "Life Without Fear" because we believe that every animal has the right to live without fear. We, too, try to live without fear and encourage our volunteers to do the same.

The sanctuary is run by a small team of long-term volunteers, however, the day to day running of the animal sanctuary, the administration duties and the ongoing financial management means that we are spread very thin. We are therefore recruiting for a Field Manager to oversee the maintenance of the sanctuary on a day to day basis.

THE ROLE:

The main responsibilities of the Field Manager are as follows:

  • To work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to delegate tasks which can be completed by the volunteers, and providing instructions on how these tasks should be done

  • To take part in the daily routine (feeding animals, walking dogs etc)

  • To undertake routine maintenance such as pool cleaning, tent upkeep, strimming of pathways, and general tidying and repairs

  • To manage the stock levels of animal feed

  • To undertake larger projects such as building new animal runs and fences

THE PERSON:

Essential:

  • Maintenance experience and skills (power tool experience & building experience)

  • Fantastic interpersonal and communication skills. Being a “people person” helps

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills

  • Team player and the ability to follow instructions, but also the ability to use your initiative

  • An upbeat and positive view on life

  • Integrity

  • Physically fit and mentally strong

  • A love of animals; compassion and attentiveness to their needs

  • Selfless by nature

  • A willingness to work hard and long hours – blood, sweat and tears go into keeping the sanctuary alive; it is far from a holiday and you must be able to handle intense pressure and big responsibilities

  • Vegan or transitioning; this is a 100% vegan animal sanctuary

  • Full driving licence. You do not need to have experience of driving abroad as we can teach you this, however being a confident driver is required

  • A passion to affect change, develop the sanctuary, animal welfare funding projects and yourself

Desirable:

  • Strong swimmer with life saver credentials

  • First aid trained

As the hours are long and the working conditions are sometimes very tough, you should be under no doubt that this should be your passion. You will be eating, breathing, sleeping, talking and working this sanctuary 24 - 7 for the entire season. You have to love it like we all do.

THE DEAL:

In return for your dedication and commitment, we are offering all of your accommodation, food, work clothing and an opportunity to join our team and be involved with its future development and growth.

The position is currently unpaid but that could possibly change as the project grows.

We are looking for a dedicated, passionate, hard working individual to join the team as our lead Volunteer Coordinator

Role: Volunteer Coordinator

Location: Murcia, Spain

Term: Immediate start – November 2019  (with the potential to continue for the 2020 season from March- November )

Remuneration: At present, this is a voluntary position with meals and accommodation provided by us at the sanctuary

The volunteer program is what keeps the sanctuary alive and WE LOVE our volunteers. Unfortunately the day to day running of the animal sanctuary and both the administration duties and the ongoing financial management means that we are spread very thin indeed and we don´t want that to impact negatively on our volunteers with a reduced or watered down experience at the ridge.
We are therefore recruiting for a Volunteer Coordinator to make sure our short stay volunteers have an unforgettable experience.

THE ROLE:
The Volunteer Coordinator is the main point of contact for our shot stay volunteers. They should be approachable, friendly and communicate clearly. They should have amazing interpersonal skills and be constantly listening to the volunteers and making a concious effort to ensure they have the best experience at Jacobs Ridge. They should mix labour intensive tasks with fun tasks and undertake these tasks in a way that is appropriate to the group at the time. For example, some people will respond well to high energy (putting music on, chatting etc) when doing tasks whereas others may prefer to work in silence and use the chores as thinking time.

The main responsibilities of the Volunteer Coordinator are as follows:

  • To welcome new volunteers and do their induction, showing them the volunteer areas and introducing them to the animals and telling them their back stories

  • To take part in the daily routine (feeding animals, walking dogs etc) and teach them what to do

  • To undertake additional tasks with volunteers (mucking out, pony walking, horse grooming, land tidying, animal cuddling etc)

  • To spend time talking to volunteers and regularly check how they are getting on with the work, if they are having a good time and if they need anything

  • Taking volunteers out on excursions: rock jumping, lake swimming, kayaking, sight seeing, thermal pools etc

  • To work closely with the Field Manager and assist with any associated projects

  • To clean and maintain the cleanliness of shared team and volunteer areas

  • To collect volunteers from the airport and drop them back when necessary

THE PERSON:

Essential:

  • Fantastic interpersonal and communication skills. You must love people as much as you love animals

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills

  • Team player and the ability to follow instructions, but also the ability to use your initiative

  • An upbeat and positive view on life
